Color Is Back, and Fashion Is Finally Letting Clothes Have a Pulse Again

Fashion seems to have remembered that color can do more than decorate. After years of beige, black, ivory, grey, and beautifully expensive restraint, the runways are shifting toward colors that carry the whole look: tomato red, pool blue, plum, brown, strange greens, softened pastels, and combinations that feel intentionally alive.

Vogue’s color report reads the shift through recent menswear, where color is no longer being treated as an accent. It is becoming the structure of the outfit. That distinction matters. A bright shoe or bag can wake up a neutral look, but a full color story changes the mood entirely.

The end of 90s minimalism does not mean the end of discipline. The best color dressing right now is controlled, not chaotic. A tomato red can feel sharper against brown than against black. Pool blue looks more expensive when it is grounded by navy. Plum can soften tailoring without making it sentimental. The combinations work when they create movement for the eye.

This is especially important after a long period when “taste” often meant removing things. Color asks a different question: what happens if taste means choosing more precisely, not choosing less?

The runway has been moving toward that answer for months. Our coverage of Paris Menswear SS27 showed how heat, utility, and color could make clothes feel more honest, while couture’s emotional turn made the case for fashion with more feeling. Color is part of that same return.

For wardrobes, the easiest way in is not a rainbow. It is one confident pairing. Brown with tomato. Navy with sky blue. Cream with acid green. Grey with plum. The point is not to dress louder for the sake of it. The point is to let clothing create a mood before accessories have to do all the work.

If minimalism was about control, the new color story is about confidence. It suggests that fashion’s next chapter may still be polished, but it will not be blank.
